Nigerian designers/fashion brands are increasing by the day and patronizing them form a smart decision as against shopping abroad.
Truth be
told a lot of these brands are still struggling with quality of work,
originality and more but a few form quite impressive ones in the mix as
they grow in quantity daily. On an average a properly planned fashion
brand launches every three months in Lagos Nigeria according to
observations.
Some Nigerian based
designers and their brands are worth every penny (same can't be said of
some yet again) with their design concepts, careful details,
construction as well as brand presentation (in form of labels/tags up
till branded bags et al) and every other thing they represent.
Nigerian
designers/brands have come a long way with some steadily introducing
and improving season after season making sure their dedicated customers
stay with them and so far they are doing just that.
There are reasons patronizing Nigerian designers is a smart decision, take a look at these five:
1. A Nigerian designer/brand understands the 'Nigerian body'
Most
brands out of Nigeria know how to craft pieces for the average Nigerian
body. An average Nigerian has a build that most designers are familiar
with and they bear this in mind when creating those pieces.
With Nigerian designs, you usually don't need to tug and adjust as there's a high chance of snagging exactly what fits.
2. They are usually made to measure
Just
like in 1 above, there's a high chance of reaching a designer to get
exactly what one wants, from an altered design to specified details and
more that suit personal taste which is a big deal for a style
lover/enthusiast.
3. Weather friendly/practical as well as functional
Nigerian
designers create pieces with weather friendly and practical fabrics
that work all round season for clients. A lot of the brands especially
the ones based in here understand functionality and weather which is
infused in their designs.
A Nigerian brand won't
make dresses or pants out of leather for instance or make accessories
like thigh high boots except for limited editions which makes sense for
the buyer. There are frustrating cases where shopping for loved pieces
abroad but end up non-practical/non-functional
4. There's the foreign exchange challenge
Shopping
Nigerian designed pieces is also a smart decision especially because of
the recession which places the naira at an obvious disadvantage! Before
shopping abroad these days, people compare prices and with the constant
soaring of dollars and pounds, Nigerian made pieces are smart
alternatives.
5. Why not buy Nigerian
It's
great to just buy Nigerian! With the recession, it makes sense to put
money back into the economy by buying Nigerian pieces and moreso when
they are crafted to meet international standards especially where high
street pieces!
